With the rapid development of industrial automation technology, distributed control systems (DCS) have been widely used in various PVA manufacturers. DCS, as an important component of process production monitoring, determines the stability and operation of the entire production. Once the DCS system malfunctions, it can cause process fluctuations that affect product quality, or even shut down the entire production line. Therefore, it ensures reliable and stable operation, extending its service life. The performance of the DCS system and ensuring the continuity and safety of production are extremely important.
The DCS system and other computer equipment are composed of electronic components and large-scale integrated circuits, with a compact structure. The control components adopt redundant fault-tolerant technology, which improves operational reliability. However, due to environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, dust, corrosion, power supply, noise, grounding impedance, vibration, and rodent damage, as well as usage methods such as component aging and software failure, the long-term reliable and stable operation of the DCS system cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, managing and maintaining the DCS system well is an important issue,
My own opinions on years of experience in managing and maintaining DCS systems, for your reference.
2. To improve the maintenance level of the DCS system, the following preparations must be made before maintenance:
2.1 Understand the overall design concept of the system based on the documentation provided in the design plan. It is necessary to be familiar with the structure and functional composition of the DCS system, so as to have a comprehensive understanding of the system. The Yokogawa CentumCS system adopted by our company mainly consists of three parts: control station FCS, operation station HIS, and control network Vlnet.
2.2 Familiarize oneself with the external wiring of the system, understand the control principles of each functional module, and form the concepts of information flow and control flow for each module. Combined with the external wiring diagram, walk through the system hardware several times with each functional module as a unit, until you can clearly understand the actual direction of functional control and information feedback.
2.3 Understand the information of system instruments and control components, combined with the product user manual of each instrument, and be familiar with the information represented by the indicator lights of various components such as controllers, IO cards, power supplies, etc., such as working status and fault prompts. This is even more important now that the self diagnosis function in hardware design is becoming increasingly perfect and popular, and its self diagnosis information covers most of the information we need in daily maintenance work. It is one of the basic starting points for system fault maintenance.
2.4 System Backup The backup of the system mainly requires two aspects of work:
1) Software backup: including operating system, drivers, emergency startup disk (especially for WinNT systems), control system software, Keycode disk (Centum authorized disk), control configuration database, and ensuring that the control configuration data is new and complete. To address the issue of easy wear and tear on CDs and floppy disks in practical use, it is important to make backups and use backup forms such as portable hard drives, USB drives, and hard drives to ensure the preservation of various software.
2) Hardware backup: For vulnerable and short-lived components and critical components such as keyboards and mice, I/O modules, power supplies, communication cards, etc., all should be backed up

Maintenance of DCS system
The maintenance of DCS can be divided into:
Daily maintenance, preventive maintenance, and fault maintenance,
Daily maintenance and preventive maintenance are maintenance carried out when the system has not malfunctioned. Fault maintenance occurs after a fault occurs, often resulting in partial system failure and adverse effects on production; On the contrary, preventive maintenance is a planned and regular maintenance of the system during normal operation, in order to timely grasp the operating status of the system, eliminate system failure hazards, ensure long-term stable and reliable operation of the system, and form the concept of regular maintenance. Practice has proven that regular maintenance can effectively prevent the occurrence of sudden DCS failures and generate considerable indirect economic benefits.
3.1 Daily Maintenance of DCS System The daily maintenance of the system is the foundation for the stable and efficient operation of the DCS system, and the main maintenance work includes the following points:
1) Improve the DCS system management system.
2) Ensure the stable operation of the air conditioning equipment, ensure that the temperature change is less than ± 5 ℃/h, and avoid condensation on the system equipment due to rapid changes in temperature and humidity.
3) Try to avoid interference from electromagnetic fields on the system, avoid moving operating stations, displays, etc. during operation, and avoid pulling or damaging equipment connection cables and communication cables.
4) Pay attention to dust prevention, properly isolate the site from the control room, and regularly clean and maintain cleanliness to prevent adverse effects of dust on component operation and heat dissipation;
5) It is strictly prohibited to use non genuine software and install software unrelated to the system.
6) Make a backup of the control subdirectory files, and record system data such as PID parameters of each control circuit and the positive and negative effects of the regulator.
7) Check if the control host, monitor, mouse, keyboard, and other hardware are intact, and if real-time monitoring is working properly.
8) Check the fault diagnosis screen for any fault prompts.
9) After the system is powered on, the communication connectors should not collide with conductive bodies such as cabinets, and redundant communication lines and connectors should not collide with each other to avoid burning out the communication network card.
