Reliability is the life of DCS development. There are three main measures to ensure the high reliability of DCS: one is to widely use high reliability hardware equipment and production technology; Second, redundancy technology is widely used; Thirdly, the fault tolerance technology, fault self diagnosis and automatic processing technology of the system are widely implemented in the software design. Nowadays, the MTBF of most distributed control systems can reach tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of hours.Investigate the hierarchical structure of DCS. DCS level and control management level are the two most basic links of DCS.
The process control level realizes the decentralized control functions of signal input, transformation, operation and output. In different DCS, the control devices of process control level are different, such as process control unit, field control station, process interface unit, etc., but their structural forms are roughly the same, which can be collectively referred to as field control unit FCU. The process management level consists of an engineer station, an operator station, a management computer, etc., which completes the centralized monitoring and management of the process control level. It is usually called an operation station. The hardware and software of DCS are designed according to modular structure, so the development of DCS is actually to combine various basic modules provided by the system into a system according to actual needs. This process is called system configuration.
The field control unit is generally far away from the control center and installed near the site. Its highly modular structure can be configured into a process control unit with a scale ranging from several monitoring points to hundreds of monitoring points according to the needs of process monitoring and control.
The structure of the field control unit is that many plug-in boards (or cards) with scattered functions are installed in the plug-in box according to a certain logical or physical sequence. The field control units and their control management level are connected by bus to realize information interaction.

Configuration of plug-ins configure host plug-ins (CPU plug-ins), power plug-ins, i/o plug-ins, communication plug-ins and other hardware devices according to system requirements and control scale;

Hardware redundancy configuration redundant configuration for key equipment is an important means to improve the reliability of DCS. DCs can usually realize redundant configuration for host plug-ins, power plug-ins, communication plug-ins, networks and key i/o plug-ins.

For DCS with different hardware installation, there will be corresponding provisions in logical sequence or physical sequence for the installation of various plug-ins in the plug-in box. In addition, the field control unit is usually divided into two types: basic type and extended type. The so-called basic type means that various plug-ins are installed in a plug-in box, but more often, an expandable structure is required, that is, a field control unit also includes several digital input / output expansion units, which are connected with each other by bus.
In essence, the structure and configuration requirements of field control unit are consistent with the hardware configuration of modular PLC.
Since the operation station, the process data from each control unit is displayed and recorded, which is the operation interface for human and production process information interaction. Typical operation stations include host system, display equipment, keyboard input equipment, information storage equipment and print output equipment, which mainly realize powerful display functions (such as analog parameter display, system status display, multiple picture display, etc.), alarm function, operation function, report printing function, configuration and programming function, etc.In addition, DCS operation station is also divided into operator station and engineer station. From the perspective of system function, the former mainly realizes general production operation and monitoring tasks, and has the functions of data acquisition and processing, monitoring screen display, fault diagnosis and alarm. In addition to the general functions of the operator station, the latter shall also have the functions of system configuration, control target modification, etc. From the perspective of hardware equipment, the engineer station and operator station of most systems are combined together, and only one engineer keyboard is used to distinguish them.
The software system of DCS is shown in Figure 2. It can usually provide users with quite rich functional software modules and functional software packages. The control engineer uses the configuration software provided by DCs to properly "assemble and connect" (i.e. configure) various functional software to generate various application software that meet the requirements of the control system.
